Our sessions utilize the spring-based Reformer, Stability Chair, Cadillac Table,  and Springboards, as well as BOSU stability trainers, balls, rollers, resistance bands, and much more. The sparrow, or the "blue bird of happiness," is also known for traveling great distances, yet always returns home. We want to help you feel happy, healthy, and home in your body.

The backbone of Blue Sparrow Pilates is its well-rounded roster of extensively experienced instructors, who each offer a unique approach to training. Our instructors are truly the “crème de la crème” of the Pilates world having all trained in STOTT PILATES®. STOTT PILATES® is widely considered the “Harvard” of Pilates education institutions, requiring a minimum of 800 hours of rigorous study and training in anatomy, rehabilitation, and special populations, as well as apprentice teaching. Level 3: Certified Senior Instructors (CSI)

Works with general conditioning, injury prevention and rehabilitation, post-operative rehabilitation, chronic conditions, athletic and performance training.

Fully certified with a minimum of 5,000 hours teaching STOTT PILATES® and has successfully completed the requirements necessary to teach new instructors in the STOTT PILATES® method. Each CSI has developed a deep understanding of the method and is able to communicate effectively to a wide-range of clients and students alike. CSI have extensive rehabilitation training and experience. Additionally CSI may be qualified to teach GYROTONIC®, CORE™ Athletic Conditioning & Performance Training™, Total Barre™, personal training, and/or TRX®.

Holly Furgason is the founder and CEO of Blue Sparrow Pilates with locations in San Francisco (2007) and Oakland (2015), CA. Renowned for excellence in the Bay Area, Blue Sparrow Pilates attracts students from around the world as the only STOTT PILATES® Licensed Training Center in San Francisco. Holly is the creator of, a mentorship blog for Pilates instructors, and Prenatal Pilates, a mobile Pilates app designed to train prenatal and postpartum women at home.

Holly has been studying Pilates for close to 17 years and teaching in San Francisco since 2004. Holly completed her STOTT PILATES certification in 2001, and then went on to become a STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer (2011), CORE Athletic Conditioning Instructor Trainer (2013), and a Total Barre Instructor Trainer (2015).

Holly’s challenging classes and playful personality have established her as a powerful name in Pilates. In a recent article Holly was called a “favorite Bay Area fitness gurus.” Holly is a blogger for Pilates Style Magazine and in 2013 was voted as one of the top ten instructors international through Pilates Anytime. In 2013 Holly joined the faculty at Mills College to train dancers to teach Pilates.

With well over 10,000 hours of teaching experience, Holly has worked with a wide range of clientele from severely injured to high level athletes. Holly has extensive experience working with a diverse range of injuries including chronic pain, scoliosis, herniated/slipped/bulging discs, back pain, shoulder & rotator cuff tears, knee and hip issues, tendonitis, labral tears, ACL tears, hip and knee replacements, post-polio, breast cancer recovery, and pre/post-natal recovery.

Melissa is classically trained in ballet and modern dance, and performed professionally in Minneapolis, MN and the Bay Area. She certified in STOTT PILATES®in St. Paul, MN (2007), studying with Kelly Dormady, Jill Winnegar, and Deborah Hunt. She completed her STOTT PILATES® full certification in 2012, and then joined the elite ranks of STOTT PILATES® Instructor Trainers in 2014.
Melissa offers her lifelong study of movement with Pilates, TRX, barre, and athletic conditioning. She works with a vast array of clients seeking general conditioning, athletic training, injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Melissa has training and experience using the Pilates method for back rehabilitation and/or management, breast cancer recovery, osteoporosis, and scoliosis. Additionally she instructs rehabilitation session for injuries ranging from joint replacements; knee meniscus tears and ACL repairs; ankle sprains and fractures; shoulder and rotator cuff strains and tears; pregnancy related trauma. Melissa has been teaching at Blue Sparrow Pilates since 2008.

A professional dancer for 5 years, Emily is currently performing with multiple dance companies in San Francisco. She is currently completing the prestigious St. Mary College's Liberal Arts for Professionals program and teaches professional dancers at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance.

Emily completed her full certification in STOTT PILATES® (2014) , TRX Suspension Trainer™ (2012), and Core Athletic Conditioning and Performance training certification (2014).

Emily has worked with everyone from people with chronic pain who want to return to an exercise routine to high-level athletes with limiting injuries or seeking performance training. She specializes in working with clients who need help achieving their goals. Experienced with injuries and special populations, Emily has worked with clients recovering from herniated discs, ACL reconstruction, post surgery back rehabilitation, pre/postnatal recovery, and scoliosis.

Emily has been teaching at Blue Sparrow Pilates since 2010.

Level 2: Certified Instructor (CI)

Works with general conditioning, injury prevention and rehabilitation, athletic and performance training.

A Certified Instructor has achieved certification in the STOTT PILATES® method and has been recognized as possessing the qualities required to teach at our STOTT PILATES® Licensed Training Center. Every CI has been trained in equipment including the Mat, Reformer, Cadillac and Stability Chair, and has adequate knowledge to be able to work with clients who may require specialized programming because of injury or other conditions. Depending on other educational programs completed, a CI may be qualified to teach GYROTONIC®, CORE™ Athletic Conditioning & Performance Training™, Total Barre™, personal training, and/or TRX®.

Amie has been a fitness enthusiast throughout her life, representing her school, university and even country in long distance running, netball, and swimming. She received her Bachelor’s of Science Honors degree in Chemistry and Business at the University of Warwick UK and embarked on a career in Management Consulting in London.

Fitness continued to play a vital role in Amie’s life as she began her career in the corporate world. She spent much of her free time using her passion for fitness and her unlimited source of energy to coach her friends and colleagues to complete marathons and mountain climbing challenges. During her training for the London marathon in 2009, Amie was introduced to Pilates by her physical therapist to treat a hip injury. The experience completely transformed her outlook on her fitness regime and Pilates has been an integral part of it ever since.

Upon moving to San Francisco in 2011, Amie was given the opportunity to pursue one of her lifelong goals of obtaining STOTT PILATES® certification whilst maintaining a hand in the corporate world. Amie is dedicated to inspiring, motivating and developing realistic goals for her clients. She strives to make Pilates fun, yet challenging, for clients of all ages and fitness levels!

Ashlee found and fell in love with Pilates in college. Having grown up a self-proclaimed "book nerd" she hadn't given much thought to sports or movement before college when she found herself needing to move her stressed body to help shake off the pressures of college life and newfound responsibilities as a young adult. Once she realized the beauty and value of movement there was no turning back, and she quickly realized how much Pilates improved several aspects of her life, she had an easier time managing stress, had better posture, and felt an overall sense of strength and well being. Ashlee continued to practice Pilates after college and after a particularly inspiring class decided to begin career in Pilates. Ashlee is currently working towards a full certification in the STOTT PILATES method. Ashlee's goal is to help clients feel empowered invigorated through movement because it has been an invaluable gift in her life that she would love to share with all that attend her classes.

Eryn’s path to GYROTONIC® and Pilates came from a deep love of the body’s ability to move, expand, heal and change. She first began practicing GYROTONIC® in 2001 and was so moved by the practice that she went on to certify as a teacher in 2007. Trained as a therapeutic massage therapist, Reiki master and Reflexology bodyworker, Eryn has a solid foundation and understanding of anatomy and how movement can help rehabilitate and strengthen the body. Erica came to Pilates work as a somatic supplement to her dance training. Her original dance training was in Martha Graham technique, which continues to shed light on her ongoing study of Pilates. Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, she has performed and produced her own choreography in many midwestern venues, including an Artist Residency at the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Arts in Red Wing, MN. Since migrating to the Bay Area in 2008, Erica has been a happy company member of several local dance companies and continues to present her own choreography. For Erica, Pilates and CORE ™ continue to enrich, enable, and sustain that highly active lifestyle.

With experience teaching dance students from 4-84 years old and a diversity of Pilates clients, Erica enjoys helping clients with widely varying goals and backgrounds to become more healthy and embodied. In particular, Erica has worked with clients that are managing autoimmune diseases, working to increase strength and body awareness before life-changing events like pregnancies and surgeries, and restoring balance and healthy function to clients whose careers require unusual physical demands. Imaginative imagery and targeted tactile cues are highlights of Erica’s teaching, contributing to fun, challenging, and rewarding group classes and private sessions.

Erica also is the Education Coordinate Blue Sparrow Pilates instructor training program.

Kate grew up in Grove City, Pennsylvania, an east coast town where the seasons were harsh, the streets safe and the stores self-owned. Her movement experience developed naturally through biking, climbing, soccer and gymnastics, then found a home in dance. Kate pursued technical dance training in her teens and early 20’s, before starting her professional career as an artist. For the past ten years she has traveled nationally and internationally as a performer, choreographer and dance teacher. Kate currently is Co-Director of Arts & Above. Kate entered a deeper study of the Pilates and GYROTONIC® work with the desire to strengthen her own body, remain injury free and increase her movement range.

Kate uses GYROTONIC® to train everyone from athletes to those recovering from injury. Kate helps athletes improve their game by diversify their workouts, and sustain fewer injuries. General movers feel less tension throughout the body, and improve strength, flexibility and coordination for everyday life. Kate also uses the GYROTONIC® system to keep people moving while recovering from injuries such as back pain, pre/postnatal recovery, and scoliosis.

She's passionate about passing this knowledge along to others.

Trained instructors have completed a minimum of 200 hours of coursework, physical review, practice teaching, and observation hours for STOTT PILATES® Matwork and Reformer. TI possess adequate knowledge to modify exercises based on clients’ unique needs and postural goals. Magda has a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Samuel Merritt University and worked as a physical therapist in an outpatient setting since 2005. As a physical therapist Magda has worked with everyone from people with chronic pain to high-level athletes with sport specific injuries.

Magda decided to pursue certification in STOTT PILATES® because of it’s anatomical and research-based approach to the original work of Joseph Pilates. She is passionate about helping others appreciate the value and power of core strength for successful long-term resilience, optimal posture, and injury protection. She loves working with clients after they’ve been discharged from the physical therapy as it allows her to work with the body as a whole, creating unique plans to target each individual’s needs.

Magda uses Pilates to help clients with lower back dysfunction such as disc injuries and sciatica; shoulder rotator cuff injury and frozen shoulder; medial or lateral epicondylitis; hip labral tears; pre/post-natal issues such as diastasis recti or pubic symphysis separation; post hip or knee replacement conditioning; and exercise for Parkinson's.

Natalie’s love of movement began at the early age of five years old when her Mother placed her in her first ballet class. Like many little girls, it didn’t take her long to realize that her dream was to be a professional ballet dancer! Natalie trained in classical ballet all throughout high school and received her Bachelor of Arts with a major in Dance and a minor in Exercise & Health Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Natalie began practicing Pilates at an early age due to the recommendation of her ballet teachers. After a long hiatus she was reintroduced to Pilates after an ankle surgery post-college. It was that re-kindling with Pilates when she realized that THAT was her true calling and would be the perfect complement to her dancing career. Natalie is currently pursuing her full training and certification through the STOTT PILATES® method. Natalie’s aspiration is for every person to discover their love of movement and health, and hopes that she can be a part of that journey for each individual who participates in her class!

Aerliah was born with a passion and love for movement. She trained in ballet, contemporary, jazz and tap throughout her youth, before turning her focus to music theatre dance in college.
Her professional dance experience includes theatre, cabaret and television, as well as teaching dance in studios and high school settings.
Aerliah first began practicing Pilates based on the advice from her dance teaches to help her avoid injury and build strength. She very quickly fell in love with the method and decided then that she would one day teach Pilates. She is trained in Matwork and Reformer and is currently pursuing her full certification in the STOTT PILATES® method.
Aerliah’s goal is to help her clients achieve a healthy mind, body and ease of movement through Pilates, and hopes to impart a love and joy of movement to everyone in her class.
